ROBERT DICK
A flutist whose technical resources and imagination seem limitless.
– New York Times
Robert Dick has dispensed with preconceptions about what a flutist should sound like and what a flutist should play. A revolutionary composer/performer/improviser, he has literally redefined the flute for our age. He began composing and improvising in the 1970s, driven by the core idea that acoustic instruments can be played as human-powered synthesizers.
A National Flute Association Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 2014, Robert has received a Pro Musicis Foundation International Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA Composer’s Fellowships and numerous grants and commissions. His music has been performed by thousands of flutists around the globe.
Dick's 2021 CD releases are "Laugh and Lie Down", improvised duos with Dan Blake, soprano sax, and "Structures of Unreason", improvised duos with Nicola Hein, electric guitar.
