SU-CASA Arts Programs For Seniors

Welcome to SU-CASA, New York City’s effort to enrich the lives of its senior citizens through the arts. This initiative connects artists with seniors in their local communities and positively impacts the well-being of older adults through multidisciplinary arts activities. Past activities have included memoir writing, crafting, dance and theater production, and many more. Programming is scattered throughout The Bronx, providing a creative outlet for seniors near and far to express themselves as they please.

Visual Art

ARTOPIA 2021: Art Class for Seniors!

For ARTOPIA, we'll meet twice weekly and make joyful art based on our life experiences, wisdom, and love. Drawing, sculpture, collage, cartoons, and writing will be created as we illustrate the beauty of our lives. Sign up and get your free art-kit mailed to your home. The program will happen on Mondays and Wednesdays @ 2:00pm going all the way through June.  Please join us and make new friends, have some fun, and get your art on!

Explorations in Painting!

Each week we'll virtually analyze diverse artworks, explore themes of culture and identity, and experiment with different art forms and genres like still life, portraiture, and abstraction to create original works of art. The class series will also include a virtual trip to a NYC museum. 

No experience necessary, just bring your creativity and an open mind! An art supply package will be sent to participants.

Literary Arts and Storytelling

Romancing the Word and the Metaphor

A series of participatory poetry workshop sessions for seniors examining metaphor, both implied and sustained, culminating in a virtual Poetry Reading and Inter-Generational Open Mic. The open mic event will feature participants and an inter-generational audience of youth, adults, and other seniors interested in reading a favorite poem or an original poem.

Say What! Funny Stories For Seniors

"It don’t have to be true; but it’s got to be good." Share a joke or funny short story. In this virtual storytelling program we will learn tips on how to improve storytelling for dramatic purposes. There will be a final sharing of our favorite stories with each other and an audience of invited guests on Zoom.

Crafting

Covid Crochet

Life during the pandemic has been tough. Covid Crochet is a craft crochet program geared towards older adults, where we create items of comfort and ease in these stressful times. 

Pouches and bags to hold phones and masks, along with cup of tea coasters, stress balls, cozy slippers, and a pretty decorative crochet mask to fit on top of your covid mask.

Picture Making and the Art of Food | Pintar y el Arte de la Comida

Join artist Roy Secord in a seven-week workshop creating permanent and exciting geometric wall art from a variety of dried foods! Create incredible adult art using natural and dyed dried rice, beans, barley, lentils, peas, popcorn kernels, seeds, spices, coffee beans, pastas, and more. Please don’t eat the art!

Dance

Dance of the Village Elders

Dance of the Village Elders offers movement/dance programming designed especially for seniors. Each session will be one-hour long and consist of warm-up, movement/choreography, and closing warm down/cardio. Intensity will increase over the course of the residency, but seniors will be encouraged to progress at their own pace.

Silver Shoes Dance Club - Ballroom & Latin Dance

Get ready to dance! Let's get together socially while being at home. Learn several different styles of social dance including West Coast Swing, Cha-cha, Argentine Tango, Merengue, Two Step, Hustle, and more! Dancers may participate with or without a partner. Classes are designed for all levels and we'll encourage social interaction between participants. Join the fun and get ready to move with style.
