MAKE SPACE FOR THE ARTS is a 12-week mural art project with a social justice theme that will be initiated on the outside walls of a Mott Haven community school. Participants include neighborhood community residents particularly adjudicated teenagers that are enrolled in the YUCA program. With this project, YUCA will be using art-making as a way to encourage dialogue around the topic of youth incarceration with Mott Haven residents. We will show how mural participants channeled their energy into the project, making and promoting the mural as an alternative to engaging in undirected mischief.
