My project represents and reaches a community that is largely glossed over & stereotyped in mainstream media. As a Bengali-American who grew up in the Bronx, I observe a stark asymmetry in the relations of my two homelands. Bangladesh provides the US with 20% of its readymade garments (RMGs), yet among Americans, it remains one of the least understood countries in South Asia. Despite the increasing number of Bengalis in all five boroughs, especially in neighborhoods of the Bronx, they are sorely underrepresented. This exhibition aims to collect & exhibit photography as art; but ultimately, as ideas about the country of Bangladesh, its people, & landscape, as seen by artists connected to the places they are capturing.
