Office Hours with the Commissioner at BCA

The Bronx Times, May 08, 2019

In the 50 years since the Stonewall Uprising, we have witnessed major advancements in visibility for LGBTQ artists and art spaces, many of which are now celebrated and embraced by mainstream culture. In many ways, this is an uplifting example of the power of collective action to spur social progress. However, this triumphant narrative often marginalizes or erases certain LGBTQ-identifying groups, including people of color, queer and transgender, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those with low income and low educational attainment.

Please join us on Monday, May 20, between the hours of 06:30 p.m. – 08:30 p.m., for CreateNYC: Office Hours with the Commissioner “Voices (Un)Heard” at Bronx Council on the Arts, where we’ll explore these issues in depth and try to identify opportunities to collaborate on solutions. We invite all artists, performers, musicians, writers, dancers, arts administrators, culture workers, and residents – whether you are LGBTQ – identifying or an ally – to come ready to participate in this audience-led conversation. How does marginalization affect diverse LGBTQ artists and organizations? How has this relative lack of access to opportunities and resources affected the trajectory of diverse artists and arts groups serving the wider LGBTQ audiences and the general public?

This is part of the ongoing CreateNYC: Office Hours with the Commissioner series, where we ask the public to join us for audience-led discussions of topics relevant to arts and culture. Following a brief introduction, we will facilitate an open-ended conversation driven by attendees.

Please RSVP on Facebook or with our Special Projects Manager Derek Weng, dweng@culture.nyc.gov. This event is open to the public.

The event will be attended by:

  • Tom Finkelpearl, Commissioner, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs

  • Viviana Bianchi, Executive Director, Bronx Council on the Arts

  • Representatives from the Stonewall 50 Consortium
