Repertorio Español, the nation’s pre-eminent Spanish language theater, is proud to announce The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship for Latiné Directors. We encourage underrepresented voices, Afro-Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQIA and Women from the community to apply.
Through this 2 year Fellowship, Repertorio will give 2 emerging directors an opportunity to direct 2 productions in Spanish; a contemporary piece and a play from Spain’s Siglo de Oro. Our goal is to prepare the next generation of Latinx directors working in the Spanish language for a professional career in theatre.
The ideal fellows will have some previous experience in directing, an integral knowledge of classical Spanish theatre, contemporary Latin American theatre as well as a familiarity of Hispanic-American playwrights.
$6,000 stipend for each director for each year of the Fellowship
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Two directors will be chosen to participate based on production proposals and in-person interviews. Fellows will direct 2 distinct works in Spanish over the course of two summers and receive a stipend of $5,000 per year.
· The first round of productions will be contemporary works written in Spanish or works by Hispanic American playwrights which will happen in the summer of 2024.
· The second round will be plays from the Siglo de Oro (Spain’s Golden Age) which will happen in the summer of 2025.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Please submit the following:
· Artistic résumé with two references
· Short Biography (200 word maximum)
· A one-page long project description for each of the proposed projects: one contemporary (Spain, Latin America, USA Latino) and one classical (Siglo de Oro) work which will include the following information:
§ Name of play, Author and Country published/produced
§ Basic plot of each play
§ Why you want to direct the play
§ The central themes of the play and their importance
§ Also, what aspects of directing do you wish to improve upon or explore during this Fellowship
· Proof of age and NYC residency
