Open Call for Curators | Untold Narratives

The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is seeking applications from NYC curators for its Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos Winter 2023 group exhibition Untold Narratives (January 18 – February 22, 2023). The Longwood Art Gallery is located at 450 Grand Concourse in The Bronx.

The selected curator will be responsible for contacting and sourcing all materials from artists, writing exhibition texts, and facilitating a public program. We encourage curatorial proposals by curators who are unafraid of experimentation and familiar with Bronx’s arts and cultural practices, as well as artists from The Bronx.

Curatorial proposals should consider BCA’s mission of supporting emerging and mid-career artists from underrepresented groups, such as women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and artists of color.

Further, we continue our commitment to present exhibitions in various media, including interdisciplinary practices, 2D and 3D media, installation, new technologies, sound art, and more that highlight the different practices of artists in the Bronx and beyond.

Untold Narratives will be a group exhibition featuring 8 to 10 artists and focusing on artworks created by artists of Middle Eastern, African, and Asian backgrounds/descents. Bringing to life intimate stories that have been largely ignored, the exhibition seeks to offer a glimpse into the artists’ communities and explore connections between the past and present. This includes, but is not limited to, topics that:

• Engage with personal or family history

• Intertwine cultural background and the life of the city

• Question how historical objects and ideas are presented and hierarchized

• Challenge the dominant narrative of (art) history

• Delve into the struggles for equity

• Examine representation and cultural identity
