The asemic writing workshop is designed by participating artist Ari Wolff and conducted by curator, Michelle Song. “Asemic” means having no specific semantic content, or without (the smallest unit) of meaning. Asemic writing is a hybrid form of art, between drawing and writing. Its main characteristics are the use of gestural constraint, lines and symbols. Asemic writing can be done by anyone, regardless of the reader’s natural languages, or a person’s ability to read.
Michelle Song will introduce Asemic writing, its history and case studies of artists and poets who practice this form of writing. Audiences will then be invited to practice this form of writing with prompts such as: “imagine you are writing but don’t. Allow your hand to loop, jut, dot, dash-- somewhere between doodling and writing.”
