Bronx Memoir Project Workshop- "A Place to Stand: The Past and Present in Memoir Practice"

From Baca to Rodriguez, from Satrapi to Mártir, physical place serves as a kind of jumping off point for the writers of memoir and the readers that journey with them. In this workshop, we will explore the places that move stories forward and the histories we as writers carry from them. We will read excerpts of memoirs straight out of the ungentrified Bushwick, revolutionary Tehran, and the American Southwest; then we will use what we glean to pull our own stories from the places that hold us, challenge us, and move us through time.

Rich Villar, a native of Paterson, New Jersey, is a freelance writer and editor and is the author of the poetry collection Comprehending Forever (Willow Books / Aquarius Press, 2014). He has been quoted on Latino literature and culture by both the New York Times and the Daily News, and his poetry and essays have appeared in Black Renaissance Noire, Hanging Loose, Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Amistad, Latino Poetry Review, and the acclaimed chapbook series Achiote Seeds.
