Advocate vocal artist, Jeanai La Vita, will produce and perform a multimedia, theatrical concert with projected film of vocal music centered around the experience of women in society, as we are impacted by socio-political structures, bio-politics and modern culture.
The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the SCOTUS last year in 2022 shattered any sense of solid ground for those of us who believe strongly in women's rights and reliable access to healthcare for women. Decades of hard-won progress was undermined by a conservative court who does not accurately represent the values of the majority of Americans. Jeanai has channeled her response to this disturbing time in our American history by creating artistic performance content focused on bio-political tactics that have historically targeted women. The controlling legislative power of bio-politics, which impose valuation and surveillance over the lives of citizens, have predominantly impacted women, especially those in lower economic brackets and women from minority demographics. Her personal experience as an American woman, navigating bio-political agendas related to procreation, body autonomy, and access to healthcare, equips her to bridge the worlds of the arts and humanities as she curates theatrical, musical performances to promote awareness and community strength among women and supporters of women's rights. By integrating theatrical elements and projecting film in my performances, she modernizes and amplifies these messages, making them more accessible to contemporary audiences. She also hosts "talk-back" sessions after performances to open a dialogue centered on our collective responses to bio-political agendas and the action we can take as a community to raise our collective voice to defend values and rights.
