The Plywood Protection Project Open Call

During the peak protest weeks across New York we saw windows of retailers and businesses across the city boarded up. As an inadvertent result, plywood prices skyrocketed and supply was depleted citywide. Art material costs rank at the top of the artist’s expense list and as various businesses shed their protective layers of plywood, worthless studios believes this material can and should be upcycled into iconic public art. Over the coming weeks, worthless studios will help artists transform these pieces of abandoned material into iconic pieces of public art. This plywood contains cultural, historical and monetary value that must not go to waste; transforming it into public artwork will honor the movement in ways that our currently standing and recently torn down monuments cannot. All collected wood will be re-used to fabricate public sculpture across the city.

worthless studios will provide free studio space, tools fabrication and installation assistance as well as a $2000 artist stipend and a $500 additional materials budget to all accepted artists.

Application Deadline:2020-09-27
