Longwood @ Governors Island

New Work

The Longwood @ Governors Island Residency Program is a collaborative effort between the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) and the Longwood Arts Project, designed to provide free studio space for under-represented and under-resourced visual artists from The Bronx. The first residency program took place between May 10, 2024 and October 30, 2024.

Mission

Longwood @ Governors Island aims to strengthen the connections between local Bronx artists and the broader artistic community, while addressing the critical need for affordable studio space. Throughout the residency, BCA supports a cohort of artists, offering dedicated workspace and the opportunity to engage with the public during Open Studio Weekends. These events will allow artists to showcase their work and connect with visitors, culminating in a celebratory performance featuring Bronx performing artists.

Program Benefits

Selected artists will enjoy an array of benefits, including:

  • Free Studio Space: A temporary, semi-private studio on Governors Island for the duration of the residency.
  • Monthly Stipend: $600 total, disbursed at $100 per month, along with a one-time $100 transportation fee for materials.
  • Networking Opportunities: Build connections with peers, curators, and arts professionals during Open Studio Weekends.
  • Access to Resources: Engage with year-round tenant organizations on the island that align with various artistic focuses, including climate, architecture, and technology.

The application is now closed.
