Juan Butten

Juan Butten is a Dominican-born multidisciplinary artist and writer based in New York, celebrated for his thought-provoking works that merge environmental themes with diverse artistic mediums. His practice spans sculpture, painting, printmaking, and writing, with a distinctive focus on using solid waste to address pressing ecological issues, such as ocean pollution.

Born in 1975 in Santo Domingo, Butten studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes and apprenticed under master Julián Amado. During the 1990s, he gained prominence in the Dominican graffiti scene under the pseudonym "FASEUNO," a name that later resurfaced in his 2023 exhibition. His works, including the acclaimed 2023 show “FASEUNO,” transform marine debris into art that critiques the global plastic crisis.

Alongside his visual art, Butten is an accomplished writer with published works, including Antes de Partir. Now living in New York, he continues to blend sustainability and creativity in his art and writing.
