Maleek Washington

Maleek Washington
Maleek Washington is a Bronx-native, Black male emerging choreographer, performer, mentor, and teaching artist whose artistic voice and vision melds movement, theater, music, and visual art into experiential works. Maleek has been artistically nurtured by Camille A. Brown (4th season dancer with CABD), Sidra Bell, Kyle Abraham, Darrell Moultrie, Francesca Harper, Milton Meyers, and many more who have helped him hone in on his dynamic choreographic voice and unwavering commitment to personal reflection, equity, and social change. Maleek's work has been commissioned by renowned presenting organizations like Pepatian/BAAD!, Gibney, Movement Research at Judson Church, and the upcoming New York Live Arts/Fresh Tracks. All works center reflective narration, mapping, and preservation of memory through movement, storytelling/theater, and musical composition rooted in creative collaboration. Alongside his choreographic career, Maleek is a movement  teacher with a praxis based on questioning and choice. Together, Maleek’s teaching praxis and choreographic explorations inform one another; most recently integrating theater to create works beyond one’s self- to document shared stories in the Black being and futurity. Maleek is honored to be a 2021 Bessie nominee as an emerging choreographer and to have co-curated the 2019 Bronx APAP dance festival at Hostos.
