Open Call Residencies on Governors Island

For the 2021 season, The Trust for Governors Island (The Trust), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) and other cultural organizations with space on Governors Island will join forces to host free residency programs for approximately 115 artists and cultural practitioners that have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis, helping to combat the devastating impact of the pandemic on the NYC cultural landscape.

The Governors Island Residency Initiative, will provide free workspaces in LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island and the Island’s historic houses in Nolan Park and Colonels Row. BronxArtSpace is proud to be selected as one cultural organizations to provide workspace for 6 artists in one of the historic houses.

BronxArtSpace (BAS) invites Bronx-based artists to apply for its Artist Residency program. The program responds to a crucial need for studio space and professional development opportunities for emerging Bronx artists. Due to COVID19, the chosen artists will not be expected to open their studios to the public but will be required to put up an exhibition on the ground floor. However, we will offer an online artist talk.

Unfortunately BronxArtSpace can’t give stipends but we offer to collect the artist's materials in BronxArtSpace and transport them from there to the island at the start and back at the end of the residencies.

Before you apply please make yourself familiar with the restrictions and requirements of the island www.govisland.com

Issues to consider when applying for a residency:

The houses do not have water or working plumbing. Small quantities of dirty water can be carefully poured down a nearby public restroom sink, all oil paint residue must be removed from the island in a container. Free public WiFi is available. Social distancing protocols will be in place for the work spaces, which will not be open to the public. The exception will be part of the ground floor where BAS will set up an exhibition with the artist's work . It will be open to the public only on the weekends.
