Most of us New Yorkers are transplants from other cities or immigrants from other countries. We're united by both MTA problems and the crushing feeling of loss. We love this city of dreams deeply, yet miss the lives we once had. For native New Yorkers, loss of home could include gentrification. Nostalgia creeps up on us unexpectedly--from the whiff of a fellow commuter's perfume that reminds us of a favorite relative to the sticky juice of a jack fruit that recalls a long-gone childhood. The poet and lyricist Mahmoud Darwish wrote that "Cities are smells... A city that cannot be known by its smell is unreliable." In this workshop, we'll explore our sensory memory. We'll write short pieces based on old scents, touch, taste, visuals and words or songs that impacted us. We'll then explore where these memories came from, and what they mean now that we no longer have them.
About Jakki Kerubo (Instructor)
Jakki Kerubo holds an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University (NYU), where she served as an assistant interview editor on the Washington Square Review. She has taught non-fiction writing at NYU and the Center for Faith and Work, where she was a 2016 Artist-in-Residence. In the past, Jakki worked as a journalist. She covered health, finance, and technology, interviewing diverse leaders like Graca Machel Mandela and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edwidge Dantica. Her writing has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Quartz, Huffington Post, and the Golden Handcuffs Review. A blockchain enthusiast, Jakki hosts workshops to educate others on the basics of this wildly speculative technology. She’s the founder of Novum Communications Consulting. Jakki has a forthcoming debut novel and a non-fiction work in progress.
