Bronx Memoir Project - On Language: Breaking Down the Barrier

Language is always shifting, mutating, and expanding, and the way we all talk depends on influences from languages other than English--this is especially true for those of us who are bilingual or multilingual. Incorporating bilingual elements is more than just a flourish. In this workshop, we will explore how a combination of writerly language, slang, and Spanglish (or any other English-hybrid dialect) creates a “living language” that best reflects the depth and scope of language as it is currently spoken in New York and other US cities within vibrant immigrant communities.

About JD Debris (Instructor)



JD Debris bridges the written word and the world of music in his work. His writing appears in journals such as Apogee, Crab Orchard Review, and Acentos Review, and he has released a chapbook of poetry called Sparring (Salem State University Press, 2018) and an album of original songs called  Black Market Organs (Simple Truth Records, 2016). Coming straight out of East Boston, MA, he now makes his home in the greatest city in the world, Jersey City, NJ.
