Discount Saints

, ,

Discount Saints is a photographic and video series that started this past spring. The work consists of portraits of various Catholic Saints depicted as urbanized and contemporized Bronx residents. The portraits are in classic Renaissance style, elegant and beautifully composed while the Saints are dressed in gaudy, ornate streetwear and ghetto jewelry. These beautifully juxtaposed images are my projection of what the biblical iconic figures like St. Mary (Ghetto Mary), Jesus (Papi Jesùs), etc would look and act like if they lived in today’s urban city; namely, the South Bronx. Along with the images I plan to produce a music video/short film (YouTube) chronicling the central figure of this series, Ghetto Mary. The video will show all of these characters interact in the universe they exist in.
