ARTIST WORKSPACE MENTORSHIP PROJECT: The New York State Artist Workspace Consortium (Rosendale, NY) is a collective of ten nonprofit organizations whose members pool resources and work together to deepen their service to individual artists and raise the profile of the artist workspace field. They have self-defined artist workspaces as sharing three key characteristics: (1) They are nonprofit studio spaces centered on the artist and the artist's creative process. (2) They provide the artist with freedom for artistic experimentation and exploration. (3) They actively engage with the artist by providing space, time, staff assistance in the studio, equipment, stipends, and resources to artists in year-round residency programs--this active engagement in the creative process and in the studio is what distinguishes the workspace from other artist residency programs. Because the Consortium wants to increase the number of workspace opportunities and deepen the quality of the residency experience for artists, it is piloting an initiative in New York State to mentor a new generation of emergent workspace programs. Through this Call for Proposals, it will identify up to four emerging residency programs in New York State for participation. A national call will be announced in Summer 2006. Award recipients will travel to four sites within the Consortium's membership, benefit from a one-on-one mentorship with a Consortium Executive Director, draft their own artist workspace residency program plan, and participate in a meeting of the New York State Artist Workspace Consortium that is facilitated by Larson Allen Public Service Group. Applicants will be New York State based emergent and nascent visual arts organizations (IRS 501(c)3 status not necessary) that are not affiliated with an institution of higher learning (e.g., colleges, universities). Successful applicants will have a strong commitment (at both board and staff levels, if applicable) to the artist workspace model and will demonstrate a readiness to fulfill that commitment. In addition to $10,000 in in-kind services, each awardee will receive financial support of up to $2,000 (up to $1,500 for travel reimbursement and $500 upon delivery of their artist workspace program plan). PERCENT FOR ART IMAGE REGISTRY: The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs' Percent for Art program (NYC) maintains an Artist Image Registry that is open to visual artists who are interested in creating permanent public art. The registry is consulted by the architects, panelists, and City agencies for each individual new project and is Percent for Art's main resource for selecting artists. Artists receive commissions for the creation of permanent public art at city-owned buildings and facilities, such as libraries, hospitals, schools, courts, parks, piers, and esplanades. It is also used by the MTA Arts for Transit program for public art commissions, consultants, architects, curators, and designers. The Percent for Art registry is open to any professional visual artist. There is no residency requirement for the Percent for Art registry and the artist need not be an American Citizen. If you are a visual artist interested in establishing a file in the registry, or if you would like additional information, visit www.nyc.gov/html/dcla/. PERCENT FOR ART OPEN CALL FOR PANELISTS: The Percent for Art program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (NYC) is seeking art professionals to participate as panelists in the selection process for upcoming commissions. Each artist selection panel is composed of three art professionals, one of whom must be an artist, representatives from the city agencies sponsoring the capital project, representatives from the Art Commission as well as representatives from the Borough President's Office, the City Council Member's Office, and the Community Board. With Department of Education projects, the regional office is represented. The art professional panelists are expected to have current knowledge of the community or borough in which the artwork will be commissioned. We are currently searching for visual arts professionals, including-but not limited to-curators, directors, nonprofit gallery staff, visual arts administrators, art critics and writers, art historians, and public art professionals. What is Percent for Art? Since, 1982, the Percent for Art Program has been selecting professional, fine artists to create permanent public art in city-owned buildings. Local Law 65, the Percent for Art Law, states that 1% of the capital budget for newly constructed or reconstructed buildings must be spent on art. The commissions range from $50,000 to $400,000. The artist fee is 20% of the art allocation. Artists are commissioned to create art for a variety of public spaces including schools, parks, water treatment plants, transportation facilities, esplanades, libraries, and day care centers. Occasionally, the Program will purchase artwork to be installed on site or will conserve existing artwork. To date, Percent for Art has completed 193 projects with another 40 underway, and we expect to commission artists for up to 6 new projects this year. What Does a Panelist Do? In addition to providing current knowledge of the visual arts, panelists are responsible for: (1) Recommending artists to be considered for the commission. (2) Voting on artist(s) to receive the commission, for a specific artwork to be purchased, or on the feasibility of an artwork to be restored. (3) Discussing the artwork's siting and concept. The artist selection process usually consists of two meetings. During the first meeting, the panel reviews artists' images and develops a list of finalists to be interviewed for the commission. At the second meeting, the panel interviews the finalists and selects an artist(s) to receive the commission. The panelists are consulted in advance to schedule the meetings, which can last four to six hours. Panelists are paid a modest honorarium of $150 by DCA. How to Apply: The Percent for Art program maintains a file of eligible panelists' résumés that will be consulted when new artist selection panels are formed. The résumés will be sorted according to borough. To be considered as a Percent for Art panelist, please send a cover letter that explains why you are interested in becoming a panelist along with a résumé. Please list your borough affiliations in your cover letter. For example, if you live in Queens, but work in Manhattan, please let us know. Please send résumé and cover letter to: Cathie Behrend, Deputy Director, Percent for Art, 330 West 42nd Street, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10036. ARTHANDLERS TRAINING PROGRAM
The Intensive Arthandlers Training Program provides arts institutions with a short but effective career enhancement program for their artists, as well as new hires, mid-level technical staff and administrative staff with risk management responsibilities. The program is designed as a forum and stresses the practical application of generally accepted principles of art handling. During a typical program period, 15 to 20 working artists and museum personnel are trained for employment in museums, galleries, corporations and auction houses throughout NYC and the metropolitan area. An Arthandler is responsible for the maintenance of fine art works and artifacts, including intake and preparation, packing and shipping, and exhibition installation and dismantling. The training program was designed to enhance the skills of the traditional pool of arthandlers; artists and arts institution personnel who wish to support themselves in arts and cultural institutions, while satisfying a critically important need of the industry. Since its implementation in 1998, the demand for quality arthandlers has exceeded our supply. NEW
PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY! To qualify for this training program, participants must have institutional support. Sponsor institutions may recommend full-time, part-time, and temporary employees as well as freelancers. BCADC will strive to achieve a balance in work specialties and scope; however enrollment will be weighted at the apprentice level. Participants receive a credit counseling and financial planning seminar, a workshop in legal and tax issues, and independent contracting, and career development. BCADC
coordinates community-based services and functions as job developers to
assist participants with careers in arts establishments. The program makes
referrals to Adult Education course work, including ESL, GED, computer
operation classes and Commercial Driver Licensing classes for those requesting
it. The Development Corporation will conduct a review of applications, interview, and one or more orientation sessions to determine applicant eligibility and level of interest. Applicants must:

The program's goal is to cultivate a viable cultural and economic asset within our communities by providing technical assistance, tips on marketing and valuable small business training. We define Folk Art as works of art originating among the common people of a given nation or region and such work reflects the traditional culture of that area. These can be 'everyday' or seasonal festival items produced by unschooled artists. Artisans and folk artists are people that create works such as handmade jewelry, leather goods, pottery, textiles, and clothing to name a few. Our main focus includes, but is not limited to, immigrant and/or refugee communities residing in the Bronx and the artists who use their art to perpetuate and preserve cultural practices. We strive to encourage the use of one's culture as an asset and a tool for community empowerment. We will determine eligibility for participation based on the quality of the craftsmanship and the individual's desire to pursue their interest in their craft. We intend to provide the services and programming necessary to maximize the impact of the economic and cultural assets of these fine additions to our neighborhoods. We believe technical support, loan and grant opportunities, marketing via traditional means, as well as e-commerce, can help them improve the quality of life for all involved. Career Development in the form of small business management counseling and pre-marketplace marketing workshops to ensure merchant productivity will be offered to participants. Additionally, BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as market developers to assist participants in launching independent careers as entrepreneurs. To be considered
for the Artisans Initiative program, candidates must: For

At the same time, the growth of information and increasing customization of health care products and services has ratcheted up the need for understandable information that aids in consumer health care decision-making. A new report published by the California Health Care Foundation (CHF), "Consumers in Healthcare: The Burden of Choice," distills the latest research on consumer decision-making, explores the methods consumers use to make choices, and looks at what influences affect consumer action. Bronx HIV Care Network **************************************** BEER, LIQUOR RAISE COLON CANCER RISK, STUDY SAYS People who drink beer and hard liquor are more likely to develop colorectal cancer than non-drinkers, but wine drinkers appear to have a lower risk of getting the disease, Reuters reported Sept. 20. "Alcohol is pernicious with regard to colorectal" tumors, said study author Dr. Joseph C. Anderson of the State University at Stony Brook, N.Y. "Lifestyle plays a role, as genetics does, in the development" of tumors, he added. Heavy beer or wine drinkers had more than twice the risk of developing significant colorectal tumors compared to non-drinkers or those who drank in moderation. Conversely, moderate wine drinkers saw their risk of colon cancer cut in half. "Patients who regularly drink spirits have an increased risk for significant colorectal (tumors) and perhaps should be targeted for risk modification by their gastroenterologist in addition to their primary-care physician," the researchers noted. Anderson added: "I would target anyone who has more than one beer or drink per day." The research appears in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Anderson, J. C., et al.
