Bronx
Artist Juanita Lanzó-Guilbe joins BCA's Longwood Arts Project staff
Bronx
artist Juanita Lanzó-Guilbe comes to Longwood Arts Project / Bronx
Council on the Arts with a strong studio and art history background and
extensive and diverse experience in cultural, academic and community-based
environments. Lanzó-Guilbe received a BFA (1996) in drawing and printmaking
from the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico and an MFA
(2005) in printmaking and painting from The City College of New York /
CUNY. Her works have been included in exhibitions in New York, Puerto
Rico, and Spain, including recent group exhibitions at Longwood Art Gallery
@ Hostos, Galería Guatibiri in Rio Piedras, Museo de Arte de Caguas, and
Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance. From 1995 to 1998, she was a Library
Assistant for the Fine Art Collection of the University of Puerto Rico
in San Juan. From 2002 to 2003, she was Printmaking Workshop Monitor and
Teaching Assistant for Michi Itami at City College. From 1999 to 2005,
she held the position of Visitor Services Manager at The Bronx Museum
of the Arts where she administered the Museum's admissions, bookstore,
and rentals program. She is fluent in English and Spanish with some knowledge
of Italian.

poetry based performance series. She serves as the writer-in-residence
for the Bronx Academy of Letters, a New Visions High School. Jai
Chakrabarti is a writer of poetry, fiction, and mathematical
algorithms. A native of Calcutta, India, his writing interrogates the
experience of South Asian Diasporas, settles occasionally on the beauty
of mathematics, drifts in magical realism, and always aims to escape classification.
He can be seen performing his work at various NYC venues. An
open mic session will follow the featured poets' readings.
The
Bronx Culture Trolley is a free event of the Bronx Council on the Arts.

Legal and Business Boot Camp for Arts Professionals
VLA
Legal and Business Boot Camp for Arts Professionals
is a new program that will be in venues around the United States that
started in October of 2005. Led by veteran arts and entertainment attorneys,
this program covers all the essential legal and business issues you need
to know, plus, behind the scenes information as only these industry insiders
can provide. Artists may attend at the discounted VLA member rate (as
low as $50) for two days of intensive programming including lunch, networking
opportunities and a wine and cheese reception. Sessions will include:
(1) Ask the Lawyer Panels; The Essentials of Intellectual Property; (2)
Contract Basics; (3) Business Structures for Creative Endeavors; (4) Special
Considerations for Musicians; (5) Special Considerations for Visual Artists;
(6) Special Considerations in Film/Video. This course is for arts students,
individual artists, and individuals in arts or cultural institution. The
program will present information important for people at all stages of
their professional development from those just starting out to those who
have been working in the arts for many years. Space is limited, please
register ASAP. This original program was developed by VLA with the support

The Metropolitan
Museum of Art announces its 2006-2007 internship opportunities for
college and graduate students interested in careers in art museums. Based
upon their academic training and interests, as well as the availability
of projects, interns work in one of the Metropolitan's departments - curatorial,
education, conservation, administration, or library. Most projects require
a strong knowledge of art history. Applicants of diverse backgrounds are
encouraged to apply. Internships are full time (five days, thirty-five
hours per week) from June 5-August 11, 2006. Honorarium: $3,000 for college
students and recent graduates; $3,250 for graduate students. For more

Artist Sightings in December 2005
What
are our BRIO artists doing this month? Check it out.
Judith
Baumel (BRIO winner for poetry) is the Director of Creative
Writing at Adelphi University on Long Island where she is starting an
MFA in creative writing program that will allow students to study Poetry,
Fiction and Playwrighting. The program is scheduled to launch in January
2006 and is currently accepting applications for admission. See
this issue's Opportunities Section under Creative Writing Program
for more information.
Linda
Cunningham (BRIO winner for printmaking) currently has ten
pieces included in a group show at the Krasdale Foods Art Gallery with
a number of other past BRIO recipients (on view through Jan 2006).
Krasdale Art Gallery is
located at 400 Food Center Drive in the Bronx.
Meg
Duguid (BRIO winner for performance art) is a featured performer
in Holiday Pageant, an evening of performance, video, music and
dancing, on Dec 10th at 10:00pm at galapagos artspace, 70 North

Daniel
Hauben (BRIO winner for painting) currently has work on
view in a group show "True Colors: Meditations on the American Spirit"
Meridian Foundation (through Dec 2005) that originated in Washington,
DC, and is traveling worldwide. Daniel is also among the featured BRIO
artists included in the group show, "Best of the Bronx " on
view at the Krasdale Foods Gallery through Jan 2006. Additionally,
Mr. Hauben has been awarded a commission from the Metropolitan Transit
Authority's (MTA) Arts For Transit program. As a result of this commission,
the Freeman Street train station in the Bronx (which is currently being
renovated) will be permanently graced with faceted glass panels depicting
Bronx street scenes by Daniel Hauben.
Peter
Kalivas (BRIO winner for choreography), following a two
week residency appearing as a guest artist at The Thrasher Horne Center
for the Performing Arts in Orange Park, Florida performing my newest solo
work "Nothing" and premiering a new work "Thanksgiving"
for eleven dancers of The Florida School of the Arts on Dec 2nd.
From Dec 6th - 8th, Peter will be dancing in the latest of
four-time Emmy Award-winning choreographer John Malashock's dance films
entitled "Carryin' a Friend" using the music of Bruce Springsteen
as its backdrop. On Dec 10th, he will be teaching a Contemporary
Dance Workshop on Dec 10th at Culture Shock Dance Center in
San Diego, California. And finally, from Dec 12th - 22nd, Peter
will be rehearsing as a guest artist with The Cleveland Contemporary Dance
Theatre in Cleveland as part of the Men's Project which premieres in Cleveland
in March featuring the works of David Rousseve, Kevin Iega Jeff and Shapiro
& Smith.
Elizabeth
Marrero (BRIO winner for acting) has recently ended a run of
her one-woman show, The Macha Monologues at the Bronx Academy of Arts
and Dance.
Alma
Micic (BRIO winner for vocal performance) is making her
debut performance at the Jazz Standard --one of the most prominent jazz
venues in the world - on Dec 5th with sets at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
Tickets are $15. Jazz Standard is located on 116 East 27th Street at Lexington
Avenue in NYC. She is preparing several new arrangements of old traditionals
from the Balkans, few new originals and presenting selections from her
album.
Mary
Pearson (BRIO winner for vocal music performance) is a featured
vocalist in a Dec 18th jazz concert at Co-op City 's Dreiser Community

Holiday Lights

Holiday
Lights - With the first chill in the air, there's an inviting
glow over the Bronx Zoo as Hess Presents Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights sponsored
by Con Edison, Delta and Pepsi. Over a half million mini-lights and more
than 150 animal and scenic lighted sculptures guide Zoo-goers along meandering
pathways that have surprises at every turn. Some of our exciting animal
exhibits that are part of the experience are: reindeer seen outdoors on
Astor Court, camels on view inside Zoo Center, domestic animals in the
Children's Zoo, and warm up inside the Monkey House, World of Reptiles,
and MouseHouse. Meanwhile, the new Butterfly Garden during Holiday Lights
will be transformed into an enchanted garden. New this year -- the Butterfly
Garden has been transformed into "The Land of Narnia"- an enchanted
tribute to Walt Disney Pictures' and Walden Media's "The Chronicles
of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Take a spin on the Bug

the only carousel of its kind in the world! Entertainment abounds with
local choral groups performing inside the Dancing Crane Café and ice carving

Paintings by Veronica Mahoney - Midtown Antiques invites you to
its inaugural exhibition of paintings by Veronica Mahoney, a New York
artist who carries forth the tradition of 19th-Century plein-aire landscape
paintings. A percentage of all sales from this show will benefit Lighthouse
International, a well-known charity aiding the blind and visually impaired.
The opening coincides with the Bronx Seaside Trolley, which transports
passengers in a replica turn of the century trolley from the Pelham Bay

of the 2004 Stephen Dunn Poetry Award. A resident artist with the louderARTS

is co-founder of synonymUS, a multi-disciplinary poetry based performance
series. She serves as the writer-in-residence for the Bronx Academy of
Letters, a New Visions High School. Jai Chakrabarti is a
writer of poetry, fiction, and mathematical algorithms. A native of Calcutta,
India, his writing interrogates the experience of South Asian Diasporas,
settles occasionally on the beauty of mathematics, drifts in magical realism,
and always aims to escape classification. He can be seen performing his
work at various NYC venues. An open mic session will follow the featured

The Role of the Board in Corporate Governance -- Nonprofit
organizations must pay attention to their corporate governance procedures
and structure to be effective in their operations and long-term charitable
pursuits. This workshop will address the role of the Board of Directors
in ensuring that a not-for-profit corporation's corporate governance is
not only legally adequate, but also consistent with best practices.
Specific topics will include fiduciary duties and obligations of directors
under federal and state laws, measures that executive managers of nonprofits
and their Boards can implement to ensure adequate corporate accountability,
including compliance with the Better Business Bureau standards for charitable
accountability, procedural aspects of running a Board of Directors and
the penalties that can be imposed by the IRS on nonprofit organizations
and their managers for engaging in "excess benefit transactions."
This workshop is designed for individuals who serve as directors of not-for-profit
corporations and nonprofit executive managers. This is the second in the
three-part non-profit legal seminar series Building and Maintaining a
Healthy Community-Based Organization (CBO) brought to you by the Institute
