Presentation and Reception for 2005 NYSCA/BCA AIE LCB Grantees The Bronx Council on The Arts takes great pleasure in extending an invitation to the November 2nd Check Presentation and Reception for the 2005 New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)/BCA Arts-In-Education Local Capacity Building Grantees. See Section 2 of this issue of E-News for details. ***************************************** Ron Kavanaugh Joins the BCA Staff as Director of the Bronx Writers' Center The Bronx Council on the Arts is proud to announce that Ron Kavanaugh is joining the BCA staff as the new director of the Bronx Writers' Center (BWC) replacing Leslie Shipman who successfully held that position for the past nine years. Ron comes to the Bronx Writers' Centers after a four-year stint as director of marketing at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. In his spare time he serves as publisher and editor-in-chief of the wonderful literary quarterly Mosaic as well as Mosaicbooks.com, the first site dedicated to showcasing African-American literarture. "I feel this is a wonderful opportunity for myself and the Writers' Center," says Kavanaugh. "The previous director laid an excellent foundation that I intend to build on. The Center as well as the borough of the Bronx is at a cultural and artistic crossroads and it's important that we develop programs which challenge novices to follow the dreams of becoming a published writer or poet through workshops and seminars. It's equally important that we recognize and engage the fine talent the borough has produced--Grace Paley, Abraham Rodriguez, E. Ethelbert Miller--and make the Bronx a vibrant destination for established and new voices. What I'm looking forward to most is the opportunity to interact with the community and encourage people to participate in the programs the Writers' Center offers." For information about the Bronx Writers' Center, visit www.bronxarts.org and click on the BWC link. ***************************************** The Bronx Culture Trolley Rolls Again on November 2, 2005 November 2nd's trolley event will include: Longwood

On November 2nd, BWC's featured readers are Rich Villar and Jessica Torres - Rich Villar has appeared as a featured reader at various venues around NYC and colleges throughout the country and is the host of the Open Room at the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe. Rich's written work is available or forthcoming in the journals Rattapallax and Parse; in the 2004 National Poetry Slam anthology, Poems From the Big Muddy; and in his chapbook, entitled Fuacataa (pronounced "foo-ah-kah-tah"). Jessica Torres is a Nuyorican coming to you by way of the Bronx-Riverdale, but the Bronx nonetheless. An organizer of the Acentos Poetry Series and a member of the louderARTS Project, she is obsessed with her journals and makes believe the world understands her overall paranoia. Poetry found her like sun in her eyes, spawning an inseparable love/hate relationship between them. She is slowly recovering. On December 7th, BWC's featured readers are Jai and Elena. Information on these poets is forthcoming. For more information on these poets, visit the Bronx Writers Center's web pages on BCA's web site. ***************************************** Nominations Sought for BCA's Community Arts Grants Panel The Bronx Council on the Arts is currently seeking nominations of professionals willing to serve on its grants panel. See Section 2 of this issue of E-News for details. ***************************************** The New Pregones Theater Opens This Month Pregones Theater located at 571-575 Walton Avenue in The Bronx (south of Yankee Stadium) has reached a milestone. Their first 25 years will be marked by the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art performing arts facility in The South Bronx. Pregones was able to make this longtime dream a reality by purchasing the property through the greater part of a $3.3 million goal through government, foundation, and corporate support, and private financing. Founded in 1979, Pregones Theater's mission is to create and perform contemporary theater rooted in Puerto Rican and Latino artistic and musical expressions; and to present artists from diverse cultures, offering Latinos and other communities an artistic means to participate in society. In the last 25 years, Pregones has produced over 30 world premieres and presented 100 visiting artists. They are proud to champion the merit of Latino performing arts at the local and national levels, and eager to continue doing so at their new home. The new Pregones Theater will give audiences the opportunity to choose from 150 events each year, including theater, dance, music, film, and numerous workshops and training projects expertly curated by their award-winning ensemble artists. If you would like to see their performances free, become a volunteer and attend receptions, meet directors, actors, and designers. For more information call 718-585-1202 or visit their website at www.pregones.org. ***************************************** VLA Legal and Business Boot Camp for Arts Professionals VLA Legal and Business Boot Camp for Arts Professionals is a new program that will be in venues around the United States that started in October of 2005. OPEN SUBMISSIONS, ART OBITUARIES (NYC): The artistic process is a constant cycle of creation and destruction; a journey where artworks are created, changed, destroyed and reborn in search of a work that is whole and complete. These completed works of art become an artist's body of work, taking on lives as art objects for public display or kept in private possession. However, many artists know that their surviving body of work tells only a partial story. Art Obituaries asks artists to tell the personal stories of their art works that have not survived, providing a rare glimpse into an artwork's eleventh hour and the artistic process itself. We invite artists to document the untimely or planned death of their visual work(s) through a convenient submission process at www.artobituaries.org. This is not a blog or online archive. All submissions will be considered for possible selection in the first printed anthology of Art Obituaries. Artists are encouraged to explore the following questions: When and how does your artwork die? How did this experience affect you as an artist? Your future artwork or process? How do you prolong, mourn and memorialize your artwork? How is your art euthanized? How is your art eulogized? Does your art truly die if its essence lives on through new work? How? Art Obituaries provides artists, art historians, collectors, conservators, critics, curators, scholars, and students with firsthand accounts of how artists describe their deceased art works through their own experiences, using their own words. It is our intention to inspire debate and dialog about the nature of an artwork's life and death, and the process in-between. Art Obituaries ensures that these artistic events are permanently captured on public record. Open Submission Guidelines for Artist Applicants. Your written submission must chronicle your work(s) of visual art. Explore the notion of death in regard to your work(s) 1,000 words maximum in English. No previously published writing will be considered. Read and accept the submission agreement and disclaimer. Not every artist is Norman Mailer; if you prefer, go visual. Submissions can take the form of a story, essay, poem, textual surprise, or an image that explores the art obituaries concept. Include the following: (1) Your Name; (2) Title of Submission; (3) E-mail Address/ Mailing Address / Phone Number; (4) The birth and death dates of your deceased artwork. Answer the following: (1) What is your primary art form? (2) What art form dies in your story? (3) Do you have any documentation of this artwork? If so, what kind of documentation do you have? INTERNATIONAL VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITIONS - PROPOSALS FROM CURATORS (The Department of State, Washington DC): The supports the official U.S. participation at selected international biennales and visual arts exhibitions. Organized through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Department's support ensures that the excellence, diversity, and vitality of the arts in the United States are prominently presented to international audiences. The Department's Cultural Programs Division manages these presentations, which generally include the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paulo Bienal, the Cairo Bienal, Dak'Art - the International Biennale of Dakar, Senegal, the Cuenca (Ecuador) Bienal, and other major international events. For these events, open calls for proposals are issued to U.S. curators, who are invited to submit applications for artists and projects they wish to develop. An advisory committee of the National Endowment for the Arts, acting in cooperation with the Department of State, reviews these proposals and advises the NEA and the Department of State of the project(s) they feel willbest represent the U.S. at specific events. The advisory committee is composed of curators, museum directors, artists and others with expert knowledge of American contemporary art. The Department of State may also support U.S. artists at other international visual arts exhibitions including the Sydney Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial and Documenta. The organizers of these exhibitions submit a proposal for support with detailed information about the U.S. artists and the work they intend to exhibit. Support in this case is partial; host exhibitions are expected to contribute to the support of participating U.S. artists. Inquires regarding U.S. participation at biennales and other major international visual arts exhibitions may be sent to Leanne Mella MellaLA@state.gov, Cultural Programs Division Staff. http://exchanges.state.gov/education/citizens/culture/visual_arts.htm. ARTHANDLERS TRAINING PROGRAM
The Intensive Arthandlers Training Program provides arts institutions with a short but effective career enhancement program for their artists, as well as new hires, mid-level technical staff and administrative staff with risk management responsibilities. The program is designed as a forum and stresses the practical application of generally accepted principles of art handling. During a typical program period, 15 to 20 working artists and museum personnel are trained for employment in museums, galleries, corporations and auction houses throughout NYC and the metropolitan area. An Arthandler is responsible for the maintenance of fine art works and artifacts, including intake and preparation, packing and shipping, and exhibition installation and dismantling. The training program was designed to enhance the skills of the traditional pool of arthandlers; artists and arts institution personnel who wish to support themselves in arts and cultural institutions, while satisfying a critically important need of the industry. Since its implementation in 1998, the demand for quality arthandlers has exceeded our supply. NEW
PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY! To qualify for this training program, participants must have institutional support. Sponsor institutions may recommend full-time, part-time, and temporary employees as well as freelancers. BCADC will strive to achieve a balance in work specialties and scope; however enrollment will be weighted at the apprentice level. Participants receive a credit counseling and financial planning seminar, a workshop in legal and tax issues, and independent contracting, and career development. BCADC
coordinates community-based services and functions as job developers to
assist participants with careers in arts establishments. The program makes
referrals to Adult Education course work, including ESL, GED, computer
operation classes and Commercial Driver Licensing classes for those requesting
it. The Development Corporation will conduct a review of applications, interview, and one or more orientation sessions to determine applicant eligibility and level of interest. Applicants must:

The program's goal is to cultivate a viable cultural and economic asset within our communities by providing technical assistance, tips on marketing and valuable small business training. We define Folk Art as works of art originating among the common people of a given nation or region and such work reflects the traditional culture of that area. These can be 'everyday' or seasonal festival items produced by unschooled artists. Artisans and folk artists are people that create works such as handmade jewelry, leather goods, pottery, textiles, and clothing to name a few. Our main focus includes, but is not limited to, immigrant and/or refugee communities residing in the Bronx and the artists who use their art to perpetuate and preserve cultural practices. We strive to encourage the use of one's culture as an asset and a tool for community empowerment. We will determine eligibility for participation based on the quality of the craftsmanship and the individual's desire to pursue their interest in their craft. We intend to provide the services and programming necessary to maximize the impact of the economic and cultural assets of these fine additions to our neighborhoods. We believe technical support, loan and grant opportunities, marketing via traditional means, as well as e-commerce, can help them improve the quality of life for all involved. Career Development in the form of small business management counseling and pre-marketplace marketing workshops to ensure merchant productivity will be offered to participants. Additionally, BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as market developers to assist participants in launching independent careers as entrepreneurs. To be considered
for the Artisans Initiative program, candidates must: For

Both measures may help keep babies from slumbering too deeply - a problem for infants prone to SIDS, said Dr. Rachel Moon, who helped draft the new recommendations on SIDS prevention. They were prepared for release Monday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics. http://articles.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20051010095409990001. American Academy of Pediatrics link to press release: http://aap.org/ncepr/sids.htm. ********************************************** INFANT CPR AND CALLING 911 Question: If you have to give an infant CPR, is it best to call 911 first or start CPR immediately and call 911 later? Answer: If you know CPR and you are alone, you are supposed to start CPR and then call 911 after about one cycle of compressions/breaths or after one minute of CPR. This applies whether your child is choking or is simply unconscious. If you are not alone another adult is nearby, you can probably call for or send them to call 911 right away while you are starting CPR. And if you don't know CPR at all, call 911 right away for help. For adults, you are supposed to call 911 right away in any case. Since the average response time for an ambulance can be up to 10 to 12 minutes, parents should be prepared and know what to do in an emergency, including knowing CPR. Also remember that if you are alone and call 911, bring the baby with you to the phone. For more information: ********************************************** FLU SHOTS IN PREGNANCY Pregnant moms are often overlooked as needing flu shots. After all, so many other things are restricted during pregnancy, including certain medications and foods, why would be a flu shot be okay? But pregnant women are considered to be a high risk group and it is recommended that they get a flu shot during flu season, which is usually begins around November or December and continues through March and April in the United States. While it used to be recommended that you should wait until you were past your first trimester to get your flu shot, it is now thought that you can get the flu vaccine during any trimester. And since they are in a high risk group, pregnant moms should get their flu shot during October or November. Why should you get a flu shot? The main reason is that you don't want to get the flu while you are pregnant, since it will put you at higher risk of flu complications, both for yourself and your baby. Also, having a flu shot will decrease the chances your new baby will get sick once he or she is born. After all, without a flu shot, you can get sick with the flu and then pass the infection to your new baby. It will also be hard to care for your baby if you get sick with the flu, which can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, severe malaise, nonproductive cough, sore throat, and runny nose, with some symptoms lingering for over two weeks. For this reason, you should also consider getting a flu shot for other household contacts of yourself and your new baby. Remember that anyone over 6 months of age can get a flu shot each year. Getting a flu shot during pregnancy can also help keep your baby healthy by transferring influenza vaccine-specific antibodies to them, which can last for 'for at least 2 months.' These antibodies should be able to help your new baby from getting the flu. http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/pregnancy/flu_shots_pregnancy.html. ********************************************** T.A.R.A. (TEENS AGAINST RELATIONSHIP ABUSE) T.A.R.A. (Teens Against Relationship Abuse) presents a weekly program (every Monday, from 5:00-6:30pm) for teen women to explore issues of healthy and unhealthy relationships, abuse and respect, violence, values, sexuality, independence and self-worth. At the end of the semester there will be a field trip for graduates and opportunities to join a peer leadership program.
