INTERNATIONAL VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITIONS - PROPOSALS FROM CURATORS (The Department of State, Washington DC): The supports the official U.S. participation at selected international biennales and visual arts exhibitions. Organized through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Department's support ensures that the excellence, diversity, and vitality of the arts in the United States are prominently presented to international audiences. The Department's Cultural Programs Division manages these presentations, which generally include the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paulo Bienal, the Cairo Bienal, Dak'Art - the International Biennale of Dakar, Senegal, the Cuenca (Ecuador) Bienal, and other major international events. For these events, open calls for proposals are issued to U.S. curators, who are invited to submit applications for artists and projects they wish to develop. An advisory committee of the National Endowment for the Arts, acting in cooperation with the Department of State, reviews these proposals and advises the NEA and the Department of State of the project(s) they feel willbest represent the U.S. at specific events. The advisory committee is composed of curators, museum directors, artists and others with expert knowledge of American contemporary art. The Department of State may also support U.S. artists at other international visual arts exhibitions including the Sydney Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial and Documenta. The organizers of these exhibitions submit a proposal for support with detailed information about the U.S. artists and the work they intend to exhibit. Support in this case is partial; host exhibitions are expected to contribute to the support of participating U.S. artists. Inquires regarding U.S. participation at biennales and other major international visual arts exhibitions may be sent to Leanne Mella MellaLA@state.gov, Cultural Programs Division Staff. http://exchanges.state.gov/education/citizens/culture/visual_arts.htm. BCA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION INTENSIVE ARTHANDLERS TRAINING PROGRAM The Intensive Arthandlers Training Program provides arts institutions with a short but effective career enhancement program for their artists, as well as new hires, mid-level technical staff and administrative staff with risk management responsibilities. The program is designed as a forum and stresses the practical application of generally accepted principles of art handling. During a typical program period, 15 to 20 working artists and museum personnel are trained for employment in museums, galleries, corporations and auction houses throughout NYC and the metropolitan area. An Arthandler is responsible for the maintenance of fine art works and artifacts, including intake and preparation, packing and shipping, and exhibition installation and dismantling. The training program was designed to enhance the skills of the traditional pool of arthandlers; artists and arts institution personnel who wish to support themselves in arts and cultural institutions, while satisfying a critically important need of the industry. Since its implementation in 1998, the demand for quality arthandlers has exceeded our supply. NEW
PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY! To qualify for this training program, participants must have institutional support. Sponsor institutions may recommend full-time, part-time, and temporary employees as well as freelancers. BCADC will strive to achieve a balance in work specialties and scope; however enrollment will be weighted at the apprentice level. Participants receive a credit counseling and financial planning seminar, a workshop in legal and tax issues, and independent contracting, and career development. BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as job developers to assist participants with careers in arts establishments. The program makes referrals to Adult Education course work, including ESL, GED, computer operation classes and Commercial Driver Licensing classes for those requesting it. The Development Corporation will conduct a review of applications, interview, and one or more orientation sessions to determine applicant eligibility and level of interest. Applicants must: A copy of the application can be found on www.bronxarts.org/gp_bcadc_ah_application.pdf. For more information on the Arthandlers program, contact BCADC Director Kim Hamilton-Shakir at 718-401-9558 or finearts@bronxarts.org. ************************************************ THE ARTISANS INITIATIVE The Artisans Initiative, a program of BCADC, is designed to provide outreach, services and training to underrepresented artisans of the Diaspora. The program's goal is to cultivate a viable cultural and economic asset within our communities by providing technical assistance, tips on marketing and valuable small business training. We define Folk Art as works of art originating among the common people of a given nation or region and such work reflects the traditional culture of that area. These can be 'everyday' or seasonal festival items produced by unschooled artists. Artisans and folk artists are people that create works such as handmade jewelry, leather goods, pottery, textiles, and clothing to name a few. Our main focus includes, but is not limited to, immigrant and/or refugee communities residing in the Bronx and the artists who use their art to perpetuate and preserve cultural practices. We strive to encourage the use of one's culture as an asset and a tool for community empowerment. We will determine eligibility for participation based on the quality of the craftsmanship and the individual's desire to pursue their interest in their craft. We intend to provide the services and programming necessary to maximize the impact of the economic and cultural assets of these fine additions to our neighborhoods. We believe technical support, loan and grant opportunities, marketing via traditional means, as well as e-commerce, can help them improve the quality of life for all involved. Career Development in the form of small business management counseling and pre-marketplace marketing workshops to ensure merchant productivity will be offered to participants. Additionally, BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as market developers to assist participants in launching independent careers as entrepreneurs. To be considered for the Artisans Initiative program, candidates must: For

Children appear to
demonstrate "very poor regulation" of their body's dietary needs,
a finding researchers say suggests parents should serve children smaller
portions to encourage healthy eating habits. In a study that tracked the
eating habits of 16 children ages 4 to 6 over seven days, researchers
from Cornell University found that the "most powerful determinant"
of how much food children consumed was the amount they were served. Children
were more likely to consume more calories over the day if they were served
larger portions of food, regardless of how much food they had eaten previously
as meals or snacks. Researchers say that the finding refutes earlier studies
showing children naturally adjust their food intake based on what they
have previously eaten and indicates that children are "no better
than adults" at regulating their food consumption levels. Study authors
conclude that the ability to prevent and treat overweight in children
lies largely with parents and suggest that parents serve children smaller
portions of food during mealtimes and provide more food only if children
say they are still hungry (McCook, Reuters/Yahoo! News, 6/24/05; Mrdjenovic
and Levitsky, Appetite, June 2005 [subscription required]). **************************************** VACCINES

DOUBLES RISK OF BREAST CANCER "Essentially,
we see a doubling of risk," said researcher Kenneth Johnson of the

cigarette smoke affect estrogen levels, which could explain why both smokers
and those exposed to secondhand smoke share a similar risk of getting

was published in the International Journal of Cancer. **************************************** THERE
IS NO REASON FOR ANY ARTIST OR ARTS WORKER TO GO WITHOUT QUALITY HEALTHCARE 1. Fees for all medical services at Woodhull including doctor visits, tests, ob/gyn, dental visits, psychological services, prescription drugs and many others, are based solely on your income. A doctor visit can cost as little as $15 and no more than $60! 2. Your fee structure is determined in a personal meeting with one of Woodhull's Financial Counselors, all of whom have been made thoroughly aware of the income patterns of artists. Thus, if you show a pay stub as evidence of income, the counselor will not automatically assume that you earn that amount weekly, monthly or yearly. You will also be allowed to self-declare your annual income. If your yearly earnings fall below an established amount, the Woodhull counselors will automatically enroll you in Medicaid or any other applicable program. 3. Perhaps the most unique element of ArtistAccess is your ability to earn all or part of your healthcare by providing your artistry to Woodhull's patients. The Arts Exchange program works like this: for every hour you spend providing artistic services, your healthcare account will be credited with 40 credits. Credits, equal to dollars, can then be used to pay for your healthcare. For example, if you supply one hour of service to Woodhull, 40 credits are deposited to your healthcare account. If your income qualifies you for a $15 doctor visits, your 40 credits can pay for two doctor visits and prescriptions! The Arts Exchange program is by application and subject to the approval of Woodhull's Creative Arts department. 4. Artists and arts workers have a special phone number to make appointments. On your first visit, you will be met in the lobby by a Woodhull representative and escorted to your first appointment. If you are in need
of healthcare, have been putting off tests or dental work or the like,
there is no longer a reason to delay. Enroll in ArtistAccess today! Click
below for all the details and the Arts Exchange application. **************************************** VISIT
