BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) provides support to artists creating work in the literary, media, performing and visual arts. 20 awards of $2,500 each will be granted to this year to Bronx artists. the story of an African-American woman searches for her Scots-Irish roots, from Scotland to the South Bronx , from 1600 to today. Drawing from two of America 's great homegrown music - jazz and bluegrass - the show explores how the two traditions continue to shape our American identity.

Reading by Poet Michael Cirelli - Michael Cirelli has been a 5-time National Poetry Slam participant, an Individual Finalist and the only person ever to make all three Bay Area Poetry Slam Teams, winning the Finals in both San Francisco and Berkeley. He has been widely anthologized and is currently published in The New York Quarterly, Poetry Motel & Word Is Bond. He has seven self-published chapbooks and is an MFA candidate at The New School. He is currently the Director of Urban Word NYC and has recently published Hip-Hop Poetry & the Classics for the Classroom (Milk Mug 2004). He lives in Brooklyn. Mr. Cirelli's readings will be followed by an open mic session. Blessed Rage for Order: A Poetry Workshop with BWC Fellow Craig Morgan Teicher. This weekly Thursday workshop will focus on the development of basic poetic skills through critique of student poems and close reading of poems by established masters and contemporary poets. We will discuss the basic elements of poetry writing, such as the image, the line, tone, the associative leap and the relationship of form to content. Through engaged class discussion, we will hone our aesthetic sensibilities, our technique, and our enjoyment of poetry. Craig Morgan Teicher has poems appearing in The Paris Review, American Letters & Commentary and Pleiades. His reviews appear regularly in Boston Review, Chelsea and other publications. Thru Dec 4 BCA's Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos / Hostos Community College
(1) Wanda Raimundi-Ortíz: Mercury/Mercurio, a large-scale mixed-media video installation of magnitude and complexity. This Bronx artist's work is often interdisciplinary and based on her Puerto Rican heritage and experiences. The exhibition and forthcoming brochure were organized by Wallace I. Edgecombe and Edwin Ramoran.
(2) Cyber_Folio: Longwood Cyber Resident Artists 2003-2004 includes web-based and studio works by Sung-Hee Choi, Ward Shelley, and Daniel Tisdale. Choi's project examines the language of war, in particular how it relates to Korea and its history through text, video, and photographs. Shelley uses hyperlinks and pop-up menus to produce an interactive project, akin to his performance-based installations in which he inhabits actual environments. Tisdale, who was inspired by self-promotional and commercial websites produces a site on "Tisdale Studio" and its components exploring his past and recent performance-based work. This exhibition was organized by Michelle Echevarria. All of these new web projects will be launched online at www.longwoodcyber.org .
(3) S.O.S. (Straight off the Street): MOMENT, a new video by Mel Chin, Nicolás Dumit Estévez, Wanda Raimundi-Ortíz, and Bronx residents. This collaborative video short includes interviews and interactions with people from different Bronx neighborhoods commenting on current political issues such as the upcoming presidential election. Aficionado 3 - This yearly tribute to local artists examines the love of art, its diversity, and its ability to make community across diverse cultures. This exhibition will feature a wall of prints made in workshops taught by Ixrael (artist-in residence) and Alejandra Delfin (graphic designer/printmaking artist) for the Point. The work centers on La Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead (All Saints Day) and honors the diversity of the Latino community in Hunts Point and the South Bronx. 2005 BRIO Award Panel Nomination Form
The Bronx Council on the Arts is currently seeking nominations of individual artists to serve on the Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) Fellowship Awards panel.
Below is an overview of the panel process and information about Panel Nominations to be filled out and returned to our offices at your earliest convenience. This should be a recommendation of someone who would be an ideal panelist. As we put this panel together we will notify your choice for a potential panelist if your services are needed for a BRIO panel. Panels usually convene in early to mid March. Please review the responsibilities and requirements of the panel. (YOU MAY NOMINATE YOURSELF).
Selection Criteria
The selection of awards is based solely on artistic excellence and decided by a panel of professional artists representing the various disciplines. All art materials involved in the selection process are kept confidential and the work is reviewed anonymously. Upon receipt of the application package a code number is assigned to the application and its corresponding art material in place of the applicant's name. The applicant's coded art material is the only information available to the panelists for review.
Panelist Requirements
The ideal panelist would be a generalist in the disciplines listed below, or have a competency in two or three of the subcategories. Panelists cannot live in the Bronx . All Panelists receive an honorarium. A new panel is convened each year. Individuals selected to serve on a panel will receive an information packet, a letter of confirmation with the date, location and time of the panel meeting.
Visual Arts panelists view slides; Media Arts panelists view video tapes; Performing Arts panelists listen to audio tapes or view video tapes; Literary Arts panelists receive manuscripts to read one month before the panel meeting, and receive a $150 honorarium. The other panelists receive a $100 honorarium. All panels meet for a half a day.
Grant Deadline is January 14, 2005, at 5:00pm

Visual Arts: Crafts, Installation Art, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Printmaking/Illustration/Artist Book.
Performing Arts: Acting, Choreography, Dance, Instrumental and Vocal Music Performance, Music Composition, Performance Art (non-traditional), Performance Poetry, Spoken Word and Storytelling.
Literary Arts: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Playwriting, Poetry, and Screenwriting.
Media Arts: Narrative, Documentary, or Experimental Filmmaking or Video, Film Animation, Computer Animation, Computer and Digital Arts.

Bronx Recognizes Its Own
BRIO Individual Artist Grant and ACE
In its 16th year, BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) continues to provide support for artistic development of individuals creating works of literary, media, performing, and visual arts in the Bronx . A minimum of 20 BRIO grants of $2,500 each will be awarded to individual artists residing in the Bronx.
BRIO award winners must complete a one-time public service activity to receive their complete award. The selection for awards is based solely on artistic excellence and is decided on by a panel of professional artists representing the various disciplines. Only artists living in the Bronx are eligible to apply for BRIO.

TDF's TAP Plus Program for 2004-2005
Theatre Development Fund's (TDF) TAP Plus program, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), makes available grants of up to $5,000 for open captioning and sign language interpreting services in order to increase attendance by people who are hard of hearing or deaf at cultural events that are open to the public in New York State.
Only arts organizations currently funded by NYSCA are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to new applications and to proposals that initiate captioning or interpreting services rather than to those that support already established services.
