6.       BCA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

INTENSIVE ARTHANDLERS TRAINING PROGRAM
An Ongoing Program of BCADC’s Fine Arts & Technical Services Bureau

The Intensive Arthandlers Training Program provides arts institutions with a short but effective career enhancement program for their artists, as well as new hires, mid-level technical staff and administrative staff with risk management responsibilities. The program is designed as a forum and stresses the practical application of generally accepted principles of art handling. During a typical program period, 15 to 20 working artists and museum personnel are trained for employment in museums, galleries, corporations and auction houses throughout NYC and the metropolitan area.

An Arthandler is responsible for the maintenance of fine art works and artifacts, including intake and preparation, packing and shipping, and exhibition installation and dismantling. The training program was designed to enhance the skills of the traditional pool of arthandlers; artists and arts institution personnel who wish to support themselves in arts and cultural institutions, while satisfying a critically important need of the industry. Since its implementation in 1998, the demand for quality arthandlers has exceeded our supply.

NEW PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY

To qualify for this training program, participants must have institutional support. Sponsor institutions may recommend full-time, part-time, and temporary employees as well as freelancers. BCADC will strive to achieve a balance in work specialties and scope; however enrollment will be weighted at the apprentice level.

There are 9-12 sessions per program (72–120 hours of class/workshop time) currently held at the New York Public Library - Mott Haven Branch, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am – 5;30 pm (8 hours per day). Participants receive a credit counseling and financial planning seminar, a workshop in legal and tax issues, and independent contracting, and career development.

BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as job developers to assist participants with careers in arts establishments. The program makes referrals to Adult Education course work, including ESL, GED, computer operation classes and Commercial Driver Licensing classes for those requesting it.
The yearly salary for an experienced full-time arthandler ranges from $20,000 to $60,000 or $15.00 to $35.00 per hour for temporary workers. Also, most employers offer benefit packages for full-time employees valued at $1,500 to $5,000 per year.

The Development Corporation will conduct a review of applications, interview, and one or more orientation sessions to determine applicant eligibility and level of interest.
Applicants must:
• Have basic verbal, mathematical, and measuring skills;
• Demonstrate an appropriate degree of physical strength and agility;
• Be familiar with hand tools such as hammers, saws, and screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches and their safe use;
• Be familiar with elementary construction materials, such as drywall, framing materials, and lumber;
• Demonstrate care and accuracy in any related field.

A copy of the application can be found on www.bronxarts.org/gp_bcadc_ah_application.pdf.
For more information on the Arthandlers program, contact BCADC Director Kim Hamilton-Shakir at 718-401-9558 or finearts@bronxarts.org.

THE ARTISANS INITIATIVE

The Artisans Initiative, a program of BCADC, is designed to provide outreach, services and training to underrepresented artisans of the Diaspora. The program’s goal is to cultivate a viable cultural and economic asset within our communities by providing technical assistance, tips on marketing and valuable small business training. We will create a marketplace to sell their original products and encourage entrepreneurial activities by this special group of craftspeople.

We define Folk Art as works of art originating among the common people of a given nation or region and such work reflects the traditional culture of that area. These can be 'everyday' or seasonal festival items produced by unschooled artists. Artisans and folk artists are people that create works such as handmade jewelry, leather goods, pottery, textiles, and clothing to name a few.

Our main focus includes, but is not limited to, immigrant and/or refugee communities residing in the Bronx and the artists who use their art to perpetuate and preserve cultural practices. We strive to encourage the use of one’s culture as an asset and a tool for community empowerment. We will determine eligibility for participation based on the quality of the craftsmanship and the individual's desire to pursue their interest in their craft. We intend to provide the services and programming necessary to maximize the impact of the economic and cultural assets of these fine additions to our neighborhoods. We believe technical support, loan and grant opportunities, marketing via traditional means, as well as e-commerce, can help them improve the quality of life for all involved.

Career Development in the form of small business management counseling and pre-marketplace marketing workshops to ensure merchant productivity will be offered to participants. Additionally, BCADC coordinates community-based services and functions as market developers to assist participants in launching independent careers as entrepreneurs.

To be considered for the Artisans Initiative program, candidates must:
• Be an immigrant or be a descendant of immigrants/refugees;
• Create original works/contemporary crafts that he/she is willing to sell;
• Be willing to participate in or be represented at marketplace events;
• Be able to produce enough products to sell;
• Participate in pre-marketplace workshops.

For more information on the Artisans Initiative program, contact Project Coordinator Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz at 718-401-9558 or wanda@bronxarts.org.

The Artisan’s Marketplace, a program of BCA’s Artisan’s Initiative & the Bronx Culture Trolley, offers authentic and affordable crafts by Bronx artisans. A featured Trolley attraction on the First Wednesday of the month in the Hostos Community College Atrium, the Artisans Marketplace is a great place to browse and a great place to shop!

Remaining 2004 First Wednesday Marketplace dates are October 6th, November 3rd, and December 1st -- a great time and place to do you holiday shopping! Marketplace hours are from 5:30 - 8:30pm.

Drug Savings in NY is Just a Click Away
Albany - A new state web site will help consumers faced with high prescription costs to compare prices and save up to $100 on a drug purchase while driving down the market price.

State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer recently launched the site. The Web site allows consumers to shop online for a prescription, giving comparisons by store, address and price throughout the state. A telephone help line is also provided.

Spitzer demonstrated the site yesterday and found a price difference of $100 and more for the same prescription in stores a few miles apart. He said consumers can also use the information to bargain a matching price from their regular pharmacy.

”Although not comprehensive,” Spitzer said, “the information covers 170 pharmacies including major chains in 25 counties, including all but Suffolk County in the New York area. It will be updated at least monthly.”

A spokesman for Spitzer said Suffolk wasn't included because the county has listed its own price comparisons since 2001.

New Mexico and Maryland have sites that post store prices, but New York's site is the only interactive one that allows consumers to target stores within a few miles of their home or workplace, according to Spitzer's office. The site uses prices that all drug stores must report under state law on common drugs.

The Web site is www.NYAGRx.org, and the toll free number is 800-771-7755, option #3.
Suffolk information is at www.co.suffolk.ny.us.

Get Checked for Cervical Cancer
Pap tests save lives.

Cancer of the cervix (the lower end of the uterus that connects with the vagina) develops slowly and usually causes no symptoms. Regular Pap tests can prevent cervical cancer by finding cells that can be treated before they become cancer. Pap tests can also find lesions early to prevent cancer from spreading.

Women 18 and older who have ever been sexually active should get a Pap test every 1 to 3 years. The Cervical Cancer Health Bulletin

http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/pdf/public/dohmhnews3-07.pdf tells you what you need to know about Pap tests, Cervical Cancer risk factors, and other information about preventative steps and treatment.
