Summer McClinton
Summer McClinton (b. 1976) is an award-winning comic book artist, illustrator, installation artist and oil painter. Her work mixes existing artistic styles and streetscape vernacular elements with a powerful color sensibility and autodidactic painting techniques. McClinton studied printmaking at the University of Wisconsin and moved to NYC in 1999. Drawing from her experience as the sole female member of a Bronx-based graffiti crew, McClinton created the Xeric Award winning comic book “Thread.” She’s illustrated eleven published comic works, including two long form graphic novels by Harvey Pekar. McClinton’s oil paintings feature color schemes informed by graffiti and narratives drawn from city characters. In 2007, she was accepted into the Chashama studio residency program. In 2011, she began painting Mug Shots: Public Record. The mugshot skateboards (52) have become her longest series to date. They were most recently exhibited by the Glenn Allen Gallery at Scope in 2019.
