Guidelines and Requirements

Two nine-month fellowships are awarded annually to fiction writers, poets, playwrights, and
screenwriters who reside in the Bronx. A $5000 award is given and a residency at the Bronx Writers' Center is required as part of the fellowship's community service component. Submit no more than 10 pages of poetry or 20 pages of fiction. 2008 BRIO winners in are ineligible. There is no entry fee.

Literary artists who reside in the Bronx, and are not enrolled as full-time students in an undergraduate or graduate program are eligible to apply. All eligible applicants must submit four (4) copies of a representative body of work to display professional accomplishment and their commitment to a literary career. Applicants must include proof of Bronx residency with their application. A photocopy of any two of the following are considered acceptable: recent driver’s license or state issued identification, utility bill (phone, gas, and electricity), rent receipt or lease agreement, New York State or Federal tax return. An original Bursars receipt is required for part time students. Applicants must also submit a resume or CV and fill out an application form.

Manuscript Submission
Applicants should submit work created no earlier than 2003. Older material will not be considered. An English translation must accompany any work submitted in another language. Fiction, play and screenwriters should submit no more than twenty pages, double-spaced, one-sided. Poets should submit no more than ten pages, one-sided. Poetry manuscripts must be single-spaced, one-sided. Manuscripts not meeting these guidelines will render the application ineligible.

The selection of awards is based solely on artistic excellence - the quality of work submitted - and decided by a panel of professional writers. All materials and information involved in the selection process are kept confidential and reviewed anonymously.

Residency Requirements
Fellows are required to complete a public service project at The Bronx Writers' Center during their residency

Bronx Writers’ Center Literary Fellowship Schedule
The first payment of the Literary Fellowship award will be available October 2008. Stipends will be
paid quarterly with the final payment at the end of June 2009.
