The Bronx Reads
Sun, Stone and Shadows

The Bronx Council on the Arts builds on the success of last year’s Big Read in the Bronx with an ambitious program designed to celebrate Mexican culture and history and to engage the Bronx in the art of reading.

  • BCA is partnering with the Hostos Community College Library. Hostos is a Bronx school where over 2,500 students self-identify as Hispanic/Latino.
  • 52% of the Bronx’s 1.4 million-person population is Hispanic/Latino; Mexican-Americans are the most quickly growing sub-group. Hostos faculty and students will participate in art exhibitions, dramatizations and other interpretative projects.
  • Sun, Stone and Shadows, a collection of Mexican short stories written in the 20th century, was selected due to the accessibility of the short form, its availability in both Spanish and English and the flexibility of working with 20 stories.
  • This anthology presents a superb selection of the finest Mexican short stories ever written, and offers a glimpse into a diverse and fascinating culture. Authors include Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz, Rosario Castellanos, and Carlos Fuentes.
  • The program launches on April 6th with the Big Read Ribbon Cutting ceremony and Read Aloud. Local officials and community groups will be represented.
  • The Bronx Culture Trolley transforms into a Mexican Trolley on the evening of April 7th and on Cinco de Mayo (May 5th.) Mexican folk music and story-telling will be featured.
  • Events throughout the Bronx include an evening of Spoken Word, traditional Mexican crafts, writing workshops and discussions of the craft of short story and of Mexican culture in the Bronx.
  • Students at local high schools will read the book and engage in final projects. Schools involved are: Fannie Lou Hamer High School (500 students,) Monroe High School, Lehman High School and at least 10 others.
