The Bronx Council on the Arts builds on the success of last year’s Big Read in the Bronx with an ambitious program designed to celebrate Mexican culture and history and to engage the Bronx in the art of reading. Click here for full press release.

— The final from this US/Mexico Interdependent Film Series presented by what moves you?, Cinema Tropical and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York and the Consulate General of Mexico in New York.

“Al Otro Lado” / “To The Other Side” (Natalia Almada, US/Mexico, 2005, 66 min. In Spanish with English subtitles) — For over 200 years corridos have been Mexico's musical underground newspaper and the voice of those rarely heard outside their communities. From Sinaloa, Mexico, to the streets of South Central and East L.A., Al Otro Lado explores the world of drug smuggling, immigration and the corrido music that chronicles it all. Q & A immediately follows the film.

Bronx Week Celebration

FAIR @ THE SQUARE is a festival of free family activities throughout the Westchester Square area, and free rides on the Bronx Culture Trolley. Ongoing activities include kids arts & crafts, workshops, art exhibits, craft exhibits, face painting, games, music by Bronx Underground, BCA bronxArtworks Artisans exhibitions and sales, artists, local merchants and community-based organizations displays, artwalk guided tour, trivia contest, and a scavenger hunt. The trolley will shuttle people along Tremont Avenue to the Bronx River Art Center and Drew Gardens where additional activities will take place. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. will join us at 2:00pm. Click here for flyer.

About The Big Read

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment of the Arts that encourages literacy and reading culture in local communities.

The inaugural Big Read in the Bronx was held in March and April of 2008, with a celebration of the classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

More than 1,200 free books were distributed, many to individuals who had never owned a book before.

2008-09 Key Partners were The New York Yankees Foundation, The New York Times, Barnes & Noble
and Hostos Community College of the City University of New York.
