In celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the Bronx Council on the Arts, June 4th’s event will feature:
- Opening reception for OTHER, OTHER…, an exhibition of UAI artists at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos
- 2008 BRIO Award /Check Presentation Ceremony
- Special Honorees: Dr. Valerie Capers, Pepón Osorio, and Al Quiñones
- BCA’s Annual Meeting
And the following Bronx Culture Trolley Activities:
- The Artisans Boutique
- “Works-in-Motion” performance on the trolley by Bronx choreographer
Christal Brown
- Artist in the Marketplace 28 at the Bronx Museum of the Arts
- Performance at Pregones Theater
- Walking cluster gallery exhibitions
- Walking tour of the Alexander Avenue Art & Antiques District
- Jazz at Maxson’s Bar & Grill
The Evening's Activities Include: |
5:00-9:00pm / Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos
- Opening Exhibition for Other, Other…, an exhibition featuring works by 18 artists of African, Asian, Latino, and Native American ancestry working in drawing, installation, mixed media, painting, performance art, photography, sculpture and video, representing a sampling of 2007 and 2008 Urban Artist Initiative grant (UAI/NYC) recipients. Participating artists include Konrad Aderer, Karina Aguilera-Skvirsky, Keith Anderson, Tomie Arai, Cat Chow, Nicolás Dumit Estévez, Edwin Gonzalez-Ojeda, Skowmon Hastanan, Wennie Huang, Janelle Iglesias, Duron Jackson, Teru Kuwayama, Jessica Lagunas, Alfonso Muñoz, Juan Sanchez, Dread Scott, Shen Wei, and Injoo Whang.
5:00-9:00pm / Hostos Community College Gallery
- The Artisans Boutique offers imaginative bronxArtworks creations in all price ranges that are yours for the browsing and for the buying. Items included are Korean knot tying novelties by Karen Ahn, Orisha art & crafts by Luis Pagan, hand-cast jewelry by Hector Menendez, art cards and prints by Francisco Vallejo and Stephanie Chisholm, original ceramics by Toby Liederman, and silver jewelry by Liz Ortiz, and much more.

departure from Hostos to make its way to the evening's cultural events. |
5:30-8:30pm / Works-in-Motion
- Works-in-Motion performance by Bronx choreographer Christal Brown, founder of INSPIRIT, a dance company, will take place on board the trolley. INSPIRIT, a Bronx based dance company working in community is extremely pleased to host the Bronx Culture Trolley's Works-in-Motion Series for June 2008. As a part of their mission to infuse, encourage, and invigorate INSPIRIT will involve the passengers of the trolley in an investigative movement experience based on place and perception. Tackling issues of public vs. private space, spectatorship, and gentrification INSPIRIT's goal is to expand trolley riders perception of a borough steeped rich culture and mis-understanding.

How Soon Is Now? – Features an array of work by 36 artists from Artist in the Marketplace 28 (AIM), one of the most celebrated and competitive programs for emerging artists in the country. Artists include Negar Ahkami, Blanka Amezkua, Keliy Anderson-Staley, Daniel Bejar, Charles Beronio, Matthew Burcaw, Si Jae Byun, Brendan Carroll, Vidal Centeno, Margarida Correia, Rä di Martino, Emcee C.M., Master of None, Jason Falchook, Michelle Frick, David Gilbert, Kyung Woo Han, Cosme Herrera, Catherine Kunkemueller, Luke Lamborn, Sujin Lee, Bill Lohre, Rebecca Loyche, Giuseppe Luciani, Brian Lund, Kelli Miller, Laura Napier, Dulce Pinzon, Christy Powers, Risa Puno, Ronny Quevedo, Sa’dia Rehman, John Richey, Irys Schenker, Mark Stafford, Jeanne Verdoux, and Angie Waller. Making It Together – Making It Together explores an important chapter in recent history when women artists, inspired by the 1970s Feminist Movement, worked collectively in new ways to engage communities and address social issues. Guest-curator: Carey Lovelace.

Photographs by Jamel Shabazz – The Bronx Museum’s Teen Council class of 2007-2008 organizes a small exhibition of photographs by Jamel Shabazz based on the theme of community. During their tenure, the Teen Council conducted an interview with Shabazz for the education department’s DVD series. The teens worked in collaboration with Shabazz and assistant curator Erin Riley-Lopez to put the exhibition together.

Permanent Collection: Women Artists – Conceived as a counterpart to Making It Together, The Bronx Museum features Highlights of the Permanent Collection: Women Artists, a special exhibition from its permanent collection of women artists whose works comment on social and political situations. Artists include Tania Bruguera, Ana Mendieta, Adrian Piper, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Graciela Sacco, Gary Simmons and Rachel Lachowicz, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Book Signing Event (5:30-7:30pm) The Bronx Museum of the Arts continues its monthly First Wednesdays book signing event with authors Felicia Pride and Ferentz Lafargue. Ms. Pride will be signing her new book The Message 100 Life Lessons from Hip Hop’s Greatest Songs, which has been called “Chicken Soup for the Hip-Hop Soul.” Mr. Lafargue, an assistant professor of literature at Eugene Lang College, will be signing copies of his memoir Songs in the Key of My Life.

- Dream: An Installation By Skowmon Hastanan – For Dream, found texts and images from the Village Voice classified ads are transformed into bright and colorful neon signage and works on paper. The installation combines abstract and figurative images to create narrative involving immigrant experience, labor, sex industry, humor, horror movie and religion.

- New York Press on the Wall – An exhibition of the work of twenty New York press photographers
5:30-8:30pm / Bruckner Gallery at the Bruckner Bar & Grill
- Erotic Watercolors – An exhibition by Emily Stedman.
5:30-8:30pm / Alexander Avenue Art & Antiques District
- The Art & Antiques District around Alexander Avenue includes stops at Thrift World Antique at 122 Alexander Avenue, Custom Design Studio, 49 Bruckner Blvd., Alexander’s Café at 129 Alexander Avenue, Books, Notes & News at 137 Alexander Avenue, and LR Studio upstairs at 137 Alexander Avenue.

- An Exhibition by Gabriela Alva Cal y Mayor.
5:45-6:30pm / Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos
- BRIO Award /Check Presentation Ceremony recognizing the 25 Bronx artists/winners of our BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award.
8:30pm / Maxson’s Bar & Grill
- Jazz Performance featuring the Ethereal Jazz Quartet.
It all takes place in the South Bronx Cultural Corridor

“The Bronx Culture Trolley is widely considered the most successful of the city’s trolley routes” according to an August 2007 report by the Center for an Urban Future. They researched all of the cultural trolleys in the city’s boroughs and our First Wednesdays Bronx Culture Trolley received very impressive and favorable reviews.
